Portfolio Four | What Majestic Word
Dedicated to the memory of his Sierra Club friend, inventor and conservationist, Russell Varian, this portfolio expresses Varian’s appreciation of the mountains and wilderness, as interpreted by Adams’ photographs. Excerpts from Varian’s writings and the poetry of his father, John O. Varian, appear on the folder accompanying each photograph, Varian’s widow, Dorothy, wrote the preface and explained the photographs were selected to serve as interpretations of his character.
Portfolio Four is available for purchase as a complete collection for $120,000. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Big Sur Land Trust and Ventana Wilderness Society. The portfolio on exhibit – set number 34 – includes 15 silver gelatin prints mounted on board, printed in 1963, and signed in ink by Ansel Adams.
